Shop! Marketplace 2023
Ryan Scott set out to make a memorable impression at the Shop! Marketplace Convention 2023 in Austin, TX with an immersive 10' × 20' corner booth inspired by adventure on the high seas.
Guests entered via the “poop deck” where the double doors of the captain’s quarters featured an interactive portfolio. An arched structure and symmetrical hand-built spiral staircases framed the space, while open ship hulls, barnacled graphics, and a 3D printed octopus created a playful, inviting environment.
At the center, a custom ship’s wheel table that I designed and 3D printed served as a functional gathering point. There were interactive elements, including a soundboard of nautical effects, stained glass panels, and sewn sails. Animatronic skeletons and live music brought the happy hour experience to life.
I helped shape the concept, led the engineering, and was deeply involved in fabrication. I also designed the shipping crates and setup instructions.
The booth was awarded Best Booth, recognizing the impact of an ambitious, unconventional build.
This beautiful 3D printed octopus named “Otto” was hand painted by my friends Daniel and Kelsey King Lecky. Otto was a remarkable conversation starter and showcased how our team collaborated to make big ideas come to life.
